Hello School Community

Welcome to this week's edition of the Mt. Stuart Family Flight Plan! We're excited to share the latest happenings and updates from our school community to keep you informed and engaged.

Here we are and it’s October. We’re settling into the school year. I hope your child (children) are making friends, growing in their excitement about learning and with their skills at school.
This week your child may have come home & shared they are in a “WIN group”. WIN stands for “What I Need”. It’s a set intervention/enrichment block and our school has 2: one for math and the other for literacy. (Our Kinders won’t start “WIN groups” until November.) Your child may be working in a small group or a larger group, they may be working with their classroom teacher or another adult including other certified teachers or para professionals and they may be working with kids in the same grade level or grade level above or below them. That’s the beauty about WIN- what students need is flexible and specific. If you are curious about what your child is doing,, feel free to reach out to your child’s classroom teacher. We’re primed to make excellent growth this year with this data driven, team approach. Eagle Clap!

End of Day Change of Plans

Please Parent Square or email the office by 3:00 PM if your student has a change of plans for the end of the day. We have many activities happening during this time, and having the change in writing helps ensure we get the message to your child correctly. Thank you!

e-bikes and scooters

We are writing to ask for your support regarding student safety on electric bikes (e-bikes) and scooters.
While e-bikes and scooters offer convenient transportation, their speeds (often 15–20+ mph) require high levels of awareness and strict adherence to safety rules.
How You Can Help
We ask every parent whose child rides an e-bike or scooter to take the following steps today:
  1. Enforce Helmet Use: Helmets are necessary. Please ensure your child wears a properly fitted helmet on every single ride, no matter how short the distance.
  2. Review Traffic Safety Rules: Remind your child that e-bikes and scooters must follow the same rules of the road as cars—stopping at stop signs, yielding to pedestrians, and signaling turns.
  3. Establish Riding Expectations: Emphasize the importance of riding at safe speeds, staying off crowded sidewalks when pedestrians are present, riding with multiple riders, and avoiding distracted riding (e.g., using phones or wearing earbuds).
Our goal is to ensure every student arrives at school and returns home safely every day. We will also be speaking with students at school regarding safe riding habits, but your reinforcement at home is critical to helping keep our kids safe. We are also asking for our School Resource Officer to support our students with safety and help them make good choices.
Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter and for partnering with us!

Lunch Program

We are pleased to inform you that Mt. Stuart’s free meal program continues this year: all enrolled students can receive one healthy breakfast and one nutritious lunch every school day at no cost. View our menus HERE.
While meals remain free for all students, we kindly ask every family to complete the Child Nutrition Eligibility & Education Benefit (CNEEB) Application. Even with free meals, this form directly determines critical state and federal funding for our classrooms, support programs, technology, and potential fee waivers for student activities.
How to Apply:
1.      Online (Fastest): https://mealtimeapps.com/ (new, easier-to-use platform!)
2.      Paper Application: Hard copies are available on our website and at your school’s office. Note: A new application must be submitted every school year to maintain benefits.
Complete a Consent to Share Form HERE (so your meal eligibility status can be shared with other programs)
If you have any questions or need assistance completing the application, please contact the Ellensburg School District Child Nutrition Department at (509) 925-8217 or visit our district website. Warm regards,

Transportation
Every year if you want your child to ride the bus they need to sign up with transportation. Simply click on the above link to get the information and sign up.

Safety Protocol for Early Arrivals

IMPORTANT REMINDER
As part of our ongoing commitment to student safety, the MSE Safety Committee needs your support. We need to remind families that we are unable to provide supervision before 8:45 a.m. each day and thus cannot guarantee the safety of any child who is dropped off prior to that time.
To ensure all students are safe and are properly supervised, please plan for your child to arrive no earlier than 8:45 a.m. Your student(s) MUST remain in your supervision until that time.
MSE Early Arrival Safety Procedure in Brief:
If you arrive at school prior to 8:45 am:
Park your vehicle a designated parking spot
You and your child(ren) must remain in your car until the supervision period officially begins at 8:45.
DO NOT drop off your students unattended before 8:45.
We require, and greatly appreciate your support and cooperation in adhering to our MSE Safety Procedure. Together, we can ensure all students are safe and secure.
Working to keep everyone safe!

Snacks

We’ve recently noticed an increase in students bringing highly processed snack foods—such as spicy chips like Takis—for breakfast or classroom snacks. While these items may be popular, they are not the best choice to support students’ health, focus, and learning.   The intense spices can also be harsh on young digestive systems and may cause discomfort during the school day.

Please also remember that our school provides a free healthy, balanced breakfast for all students each morning. This is a great option to ensure children start their day with the nutrition they need to learn and feel their best.

Thank you for your support in helping your child make choices that promote their well-being and success at school.

Birthday Treats or Snacks for the Class

If you plan to send in birthday treats for your child's class, or snacks, please make sure they are bite-sized and meet our district wellness policy.
As outlined in District Policy 6700P:
  • all foods brought for celebrations must meet or exceed the USDA Smart Snacks in School nutrition standards.
  • The district provides healthy party ideas and non-food celebration options.
Thank you for helping us celebrate in a way that keeps all students safe and healthy.
  • We also have space available if snack items need refrigerated.

To ensure a safe and smooth drop-off and pick-up experience for everyone, please make note of the following parking updates:
  • South Parking Lot: This lot is reserved for Staff Only. Please use the designated visitor or parent lots for drop-off and parking.
  • Accessible (Handicap) Parking: Please be respectful of our community members who require accessible parking. Do not park or idle in marked handicap spaces unless you have a valid permit or placard visible.
Thank you for your cooperation and for helping us keep our parking lots safe and accessible for everyone!
